Local SEO for Dentists: The Complete 2026 Checklist
A step-by-step checklist to help your dental practice rank in the Google Map Pack — covering your Google Business Profile, website, citations, reviews, links and tracking.
How local rankings work
When someone searches “dentist near me” or “emergency dentist in [city]”, Google shows a map with three practices — the Map Pack — above the regular results. Google says local results are based mainly on three factors:
- Relevance: how well your profile and website match the search.
- Distance: how far your practice is from the searcher or the location in the search.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your practice is — reviews, links, mentions and overall web presence.
You can't move your office, but you can strongly influence relevance and prominence. This checklist shows how.
Google Business Profile checklist
- Claim and verify your profile, and make sure only authorized team members have access.
- Set “Dentist” (or the most accurate specialty, like “Orthodontist”) as your primary category.
- Add relevant secondary categories, such as “Cosmetic dentist” or “Emergency dental service”, only if they truly apply.
- List every service with a short, patient-friendly description.
- Keep hours accurate, including holiday hours.
- Add your appointment link and a phone number that's answered.
- Upload real photos of your team, office, equipment and exterior regularly.
- Publish Google posts about offers, technology and seasonal reminders.
- Answer common questions in the Q&A section.
Website checklist
- Show your practice name, address and phone number clearly — matching your Google profile exactly.
- Create a dedicated page for each key treatment: implants, Invisalign, veneers, emergencies, pediatric care and more.
- Create a page for each office location, with directions, parking and a map.
- Use clear page titles like “Dental Implants in [City] | [Practice Name]”.
- Add dental and local business schema markup.
- Make the site fast and mobile-friendly, with click-to-call and online booking.
- Embed your Google reviews on relevant pages.

Citations & directories checklist
Citations are online mentions of your practice's name, address and phone number. Consistency matters more than quantity. Make sure your details match exactly on:
- Apple Maps (Apple Business Connect) and Bing Places
- Yelp and Facebook
- Healthcare directories such as Healthgrades, Zocdoc and WebMD's provider directory
- Your local Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau
- Your dental association's member directory, if available
Reviews checklist
- Ask every satisfied patient for a review with a direct link sent by text or email after the visit.
- Reply to every review — briefly, warmly and without sharing any patient information.
- Never buy reviews or only ask happy patients (“review gating”). Both go against Google's policies.
- Aim for a steady stream of recent reviews rather than occasional bursts.
Local links checklist
- Sponsor local schools, sports teams or charity events and get listed on their websites.
- Partner with local businesses for community health events.
- Offer expert quotes to local news sites and community blogs.
- Publish genuinely helpful articles that other local sites want to reference.
Tracking checklist
- Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4.
- Track calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Google profile.
- Use call tracking to see which channels bring real appointments.
- Monitor rankings across your service area with a geo-grid tool, not just from your own office.
- Review results monthly and adjust.
Local SEO is a long game: quick fixes can show movement within weeks, while strong, stable Map Pack rankings usually build over three to six months. Learn more about our local SEO for dentists.
